Central Rock Climbing Gym
Hadley, Massachusetts
Berkshire Design played a key role in bringing the region’s first indoor rock-climbing facility to life, helping transform an undeveloped site into a destination for recreation and fitness in the Pioneer Valley. Opened in 2010, the original building introduced nearly 12,000 square feet of indoor climbing, featuring dramatic walls rising up to 40 feet and setting a new benchmark for climbing in the region.
Building on its early success, a major expansion completed in 2016 added approximately 11,500 square feet of new space. The addition nearly doubled the climbing area and expanded the facility’s offerings with a modern fitness center, yoga studio, and locker rooms—creating a well-rounded environment for climbers, athletes, and the broader community.
Thoughtful site design was essential to the project’s success. Stormwater management challenges were addressed through an integrated landscape approach that replaced conventional detention basins with large, shallow, naturalized basins planted with native vegetation. Rain gardens and landscaped parking islands filter and treat runoff while softening the site visually and enhancing its ecological character. Together, these elements create a welcoming, sustainable setting that supports both high-energy recreation and long-term environmental stewardship.
