Village Hill
Northampton, Massachusetts
The redevelopment of the former Northampton State Hospital property has been an ongoing effort for over the past 25 years. While Berkshire Design was involved in some of the early redevelopment planning conversations with the City, our participation increased dramatically starting in 2005 when we started work on the renovation of two existing buildings for affordable housing. Since that time, Berkshire Design has continued to help advance the redevelopment of the property through multiple discrete projects with various stakeholders. These include developing single family home sites within the neighborhood, as well as cohousing, multi-family housing, and affordable housing projects. Berkshire Design also designed the layout of roadways public open spaces, and trail systems. Together these threads of connection and concentrated redevelopment were interspersed amongst majestic old trees and rolling terrain that were preserved throughout the project. Additionally, multiple project efforts preserved historical references of what existed prior, as well as maintaining open vistas with views of the Holyoke Range. Village Hill has evolved into one of the region’s most successful neighborhood developments, with its close proximity to downtown Northampton, Smith College, community gardens, and other open space amenities like the Mill River. The neighborhood demonstrates sustainable and responsible construction while artfully navigating the transition from public space and private space through the use of landscaping and streetscape elements. Village Hill is a residential park blending historic landscape features, redeveloping old structures, and adding new infill.
