The Center School

The Center School new campus utilizes the diverse ecologies and landscapes of New England to activate the students and faculty as citizen scientists by creating a learning landscape which educates and fosters environmental stewardship in students. Berkshire Design utilized the complexities of the existing site's diversity of conditions as a project resource: ledge, rolling terrain and network of protected resource areas. Direct access to the woods and meadow were priorities for the classroom spaces and preservation of woods and wetlands were paramount.

Project Highlights: Salamander crossing, organic soil management, successional forests, assisted migration plantings, plantings for pollinator services, as well as habitat for birds displace during climate change. Project will offset all embodied carbon associated with site construction in 2 years and will sequester 12 million tons of carbon during the next 30 days.

Services included: Master Planning, Site Selection, Feasibility, Site Design, Survey, Traffic Analysis, Storm water Testing, Site Layout and Design, Schematic Design through Construction Observation. NOI Permitting, and Planning Board Permitting.
