The University of Massachusetts opened Crotty Hall, a new Campus building, in 2016. Crotty Hall is the new home for the Department of Economics and is a compliment to the existing Gordon Hall which houses the Economic Research Institute. Together, the two buildings encompass economic studies at the University. Funded through a $10 Million private gift to the Department of Economics, the building is dedicated to James Crotty, an economist at UMass, and his wife Pamela Crotty, a longtime town meeting member. Crotty Hall is a three-story, 16,800 SF, Net Zero building and includes four conference rooms, 35 graduate faculty offices, and common areas. The energy efficient building design, designed by Sigrid Pollin of Miller Pollin Architecture, includes geothermal wells to help maintain constant temperatures in the building, roof-top photovoltaic cells to generate electricity, and the design incorporates energy efficient siding materials. Some building materials include exterior zinc siding to reduce risk of mold or moss, ground faced block with recycled granite chips, deep laminated timber spans supporting the full width of the 27’ wide building. Berkshire Design developed the site design in collaboration with Stephen Stimson Associates. The site footprint is compact and includes a series of stepped rain garden cells planted with native species to capture, clean and filter driveway runoff. Extensive native plantings used throughout the site compliment the two buildings. The Building and the planting beds step to fit the slope of the site.
