Entrance Courtyard
Pittsfield, Massachusetts
The Berkshire Design Group worked with Amenta Emma Architects on a major transformation of the central courtyard at the Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, MA. The previous courtyard, which serves as the primary entrance to four major campus buildings, was characterized by steep broken asphalt walkways and poor drainage surrounded by lawn and various mixed planting beds. Among the major challenges was the nearly 12’ elevation change from the entry drop-off loop up to the building entrances, which are located on the second floor of the buildings. The design for the new courtyard provided code compliant accessibility to each of the buildings through a series of ramps, gathering nodes, and planting beds. New walkways, ramps, and seating areas are arranged in a symmetrical fashion surrounded by a mosaic of new planting beds. The new courtyard now offers inviting accessible routes to each of the four major building entrances using seat walls and raised planters which adds texture, color, and an entrance experience which was lacking in the previous design.
